Hi, my name is Katy Meyer. I have been teaching at Saint John the Apostle for six years. I am currently the Learning Specialist at SJA. I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. I graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from the University of Portland, which is also where I met my husband.
I was a house mom, volunteer, Bible School teacher and Catechises of the Good Shepard teacher of 10 years while my three children attended elementary school. I decided that I wanted a full-time career in teaching so I went back to school and received my Masters of Art in Teaching from Concordia University. After spending time teaching preschool and first grade, seeing how enthusiastic my students were about learning and noticing how important it is for students to get a solid fundamental understanding of reading, I decided to continue my education and obtained a Reading Endorsement from Portland State. I transitioned from being the first grade teacher to the Learning Specialist, where I currently teach multiple reading groups, as well as two upper grade math classes.
When I am not in school (teaching or learning) I enjoy reading, my favorite book of all time is Charlotte’s Web. I love walking which has led to many adventures including a half marathon in Ireland and completing my first marathon in the beautiful Columbia Gorge this past year. Most of all I enjoy spending time with my family and our pets including our foster guests (rats, rabbits, kittens, cats, dogs and puppies) all from the Humane Society.
